Apple Might Be Building Passenger Vehicles Now
Move aside Tesla, because Apple is trying to expand on its brand and develop passenger vehicles.
Per Complex, Apple first launched efforts to build cars in 2014, but the idea was put on the back burner so they could focus on software. Then in 2018, Doug Fields, who previously worked with Tesla, came to the company to oversee the project.
The outlet states, “Apple reportedly believes they can set themselves apart from their competitors with self-driving technology and a new battery design that could ‘radically’ reduce the cost of batteries and increase the vehicle’s range.” As anyone with an iPhone knows, efficient batteries aren’t their thing, so it will be interesting to see how they work for their cars.
If Apple does move forward with this idea, they would need to produce at least 100,000 vehicles annually to make a profit. The Apple passenger vehicles are set to be produced in 2024. Because of the current pandemic, it may be pushed back to 2025.
