Indiana Lawmakers Vote to Eliminate Gun Licenses
Gun rights activists are happy with this elimination.
In what’s being called a victory for Second Amendment gun rights activists, the Indiana House has voted to eliminate the need for handgun licenses in the state. House Bill 1369, which would allow residents to carry firearms without first applying for licenses, was approved Monday evening in a 65-31 vote.
It will now be sent to the Senate for approval, lawmakers say. Supporters of the bill say it’s unfair to require licenses for something that’s guaranteed by the Second Amendment. Opponents say passing the law would make firearms more accessible, which will result in more violent deaths. “By repealing processes like this that are good screening mechanisms, we are going to put more guns out on the street,” says Lafayette Police Chief Patrick Flannelly. “And there are going to be people that should not be carrying them will be carrying them.”
