Canaan Cox’s New Single ‘Break It’ Is So Relatable

Love … It’s amazing how incredibly complicated a simple, four-letter word is. The word itself is often hard to explain because it’s a feeling. If you’ve ever been in a relationship where you were head over heels about someone and they didn’t feel the same way, you can relate to ‘Break It.’
Do you remember the first time you ever said “I Love You,” and how you longed for them to wholeheartedly say it back to you? In those few moments, whether the outcome was good or bad, they revealed their true feelings. When love is returned, the relationship is healthy and can grow and flourish, but when love is not returned, it leads to a roller coaster ride that usually ends in disappointment and heartbreak.
‘Break It’
Co-written with Walker Hayes and Emily Falvey, ‘Break It’ is another song straight from Canaan’s heart. While he originally started writing the single a while ago, he stopped short of finishing it. During a recent song writing session, he pitched several of his unfinished songs — But everyone in the room seemed interested in helping Canaan finish this song — Undoubtedly because we’ve all felt unloved in a relationship before.
If you’re a fan of his music, you know he hasn’t done a ton of co-writes in the past, but he’s come to the realization that it’s easy to get in his own way at times and it’s good to have other ideas in the room. Those ideas helped pave the way for ‘Break It’ to be released.
While Canaan may not have been strong enough (at the time) to break off the relationship that breathed life into this song, the lyrics deliver a one-two punch — Part gut-wrenching, part realization — The emotions behind the lyrics are evident.
Oftentimes, a romantic partner is viewed with a subjective lens, rather than an objective one. Canaan acknowledges this by singing:
“I played along maybe I deserved this…”
“My love is blind but my vision’s perfect…”
Those words cut like a knife and signal he knows the relationship was a lie and is coming to an end. Despite the risks associated with loving someone, it’s still important to love. As Canaan puts it, “Getting my heart broken has made me the person I am today.” In the end, maybe it’s easier to guard your heart than it is to believe you’ll find “the one,” but if the country-pop artist hadn’t given love another chance, he wouldn’t be married to the woman of his dreams today.
