Community gardens can feed a community and fill the gaps in food insecurities. People that garden to feed communities foster better relationships and shows younger generations to do the same. According to our grandparents foods these days don’t taste the same and has less nutritional value. Government seems to have more power regarding agriculture than we might think. Community used to look out for one another regarding sharing and trading food with neighbors. Olivette Riverside Community and Farm is Western North Carolina’s first and only “agrihood” built around a working four-season organic farm. Besides providing fresh produce for Olivette residents and others, the farm is working to end food insecurities. Olivette provides fresh produce for the Southern Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project’s Double SNAP for Fruits and Vegetables. SNAP is the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. ASAP’s Double SNAP offers a match on dollars spent by SNAP customers at participating farmers markets. Olivette Community & Farm is a 346-acre planned community and historic farm. They’re located along the French Broad River, just 6.7 miles from downtown Asheville.
