New Law In North Carolina Allowing Unlicensed Contractors To Take Jobs Up to 40K
You need to be a little more careful when hiring someone to do work at your home. A new law in North Carolina will allow unlicensed contractors to take jobs up to $40,000.
The law was in place but the dollar amount was different. The amount cap was at $30,000. According to ABC 11, that rule changed in October. Under the new law, any work done under $40,000 can be done by an unlicensed contractor.
So what does that mean for you? It means you should do your research when hiring someone to do projects like room remodels. Also ABC 11 wisely suggests you not only do research on the person you are hiring but check on their past customers as well. A written contract is a must in order to protect yourself. Get everything in writing. They suggest you never pay up front.
If the contractor says they are licensed, get that license number. You can check their credibility here.
Our source, ABC 11, also reminds you there are great licensed and unlicensed contractors but the raise in threshold could bring out predators.

Though the 5 and sometimes even six-figure payday is extremely tempting. If you are interested and a little handier, you’d be interested to know that one of the best cities to flip houses in, is located in North Carolina.
Because if you are going to take on an expensive and involved project, you need to know the return on your investment is there. It doesn’t matter how fantastic the home is if you price yourself out of the area with the renovations. I’ve talked to some people who are from Waco, TX and this was part of the issue with the Fixer Upper Homes. The market to live in that area just couldn’t support the flipping of those homes.
