Your Dog Understands More Than You Think
Most people know that dogs can understand basic commands, but many people suspect that it’s only tone that dogs understand and not words. According to GoodNet, scientists have been wondering if dogs actually understand words or just tone for a long time.
To find the answer to this long time question scientist did a study looking at dog brain wave activity. Marianna Boros, a neuroscientist and ethologist at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, was the leader of this study.
Boros always wondered if dogs were able to understand that words have meaning. However, it was hard to tell because even successful behavioral studies didn’t show what was actually happening in their brains.
To actually find out if dogs understand what we’re saying, Boros took inspiration from the researchers who use electroencephalogram machines (EEG) to study language processing in people. This machine studies brain waves and when hooked up to dogs gave the answer that Boros had been looking for.
Eighteen different pet dogs were brought into the lab and attached to an EEG. They all listened to different recordings of simple phrases like “get the ball.”
The test times varied for each dog because each test only lasted as long as the dog would lay down for. Boros says that the test was easy to run on the dogs because all they needed to do for the test was stay on the mats.
The testing showed that dogs did understand what people are saying to them with 14 showing the brainwaves that prove it on the test. Boros even said “The four that ‘failed’ may have simply been tested on the wrong words.”
