Emus On The Loose In North Carolina Again And Again And Again
So, when I awoke to see a story about emus on the loose in North Carolina, I had no idea this was a recurring problem. Well, I started doing some digging to get more info on the latest escape. And, that’s when I started finding story after story of emus making a break for it.
According to WFMY, the latest incident of emus on the loose in North Carolina takes us to Pfafftown. And, Forsyth County officials report not one, but multiple emus running free. However, they assure the public the flightless birds pose no harm. Ok, so that’s one story of emus roaming free in North Carolina. But, there can’t be more can there? Oh, yes there can.
Next, in trying to get more information on the latest escape, I went down the emu, I mean rabbit hole. And, that’s when I discovered North Carolina had at least three reports of emus on the loose last year. Furthermore, another loose emu report took place in 2019. Back then, the elusive emu referred to sometimes as ‘Fluffy’ and ‘Eno,’ escaped in Orange County, North Carolina. The five foot tall, 100 pound bird remained on the loose for several weeks that summer.
WRAL reported back then that kindergarten students made ‘wanted’ posters and songs about the escaped animal. There were social media handles devoted to the bird, as well as images on tee shirts. And, sadly, the bird died during efforts to capture it.
So, fast forward to 2022 in Lenoir, North Carolina. And, that’s where we catch up with ‘Kevin.’ WBTV reported that particular emu simply walked up and lay down beside a family. They called authorities and located owners, who retrieved the emu. And, officials learned Kevin lived 30 miles away in Moravian Falls.
But, that’s not all. Jump to 2023. And, everyone was talking about the escape of ‘Biggie’ and ‘Kimmie.’ Also, in Orange County, the pair, named for Biggie Smalls and Lil’ Kim, had quite the adventure. The two got out through a hole in their enclosure. And, they eluded capture for a bit. Plus, they even wound up in a State Senator’s yard in Chapel Hill for a brief time. So, after quite a trek, the owner eventually safely retrieved the pair. But, Biggie put up quite a fight. Apparently, the talons are large and emus pack a kick.
Wow. I had no idea. Well, I could go on with other tales of emus on the loose in North Carolina. However, we’ll just leave it here. And, we’ll follow the latest incident in Pfafftown for more news.
