Second Crack Found On Carolina Roller Coaster
On Friday the North Carolina Department of Labor confirmed that there was another break or crack in the Fury 325 according to WCNC Charlotte.
The DOL was notified of a “weld indication” on the Fury 325 that could be a big issue. According to the DOL, a weld indication could be a break or a crack. It’s currently unknown how severe the flaw is, if it impacts the structural integrity of the roller coaster, or where it’s located.
NCDOT-certified welder with over 20 years of experience Alfred Bessette said, “That tells you they didn’t weld it right.”
Bassette explained that the metal beams weren’t hot enough or the settings on the welding equipment weren’t right when they were welded together.
The Fury 325 has been shut down for nearly a full month because a huge crack was found on one of the support beams of the ride. After the support beam was replaced the ride went through a thorough inspection process. This was when the second flaw was found. Carowinds said that the ride would be put through 500 full test cycles after the cracked beam was replaced. Aso a third-party inspection will be completed.
Bessette said, “If there is microscopic cracking that’s super dangerous for that type of application, like a roller coaster.”
The DOL has said that it’s an ongoing investigation and no certification of operation has been issued for Fury. There is currently no timetable for when the coaster will reopen to the public. The DOL sent all further questions to Carowinds.
Carowinds is located on the North and South Carolina border just outside of Charlotte.
You Can Still Ride These Carowinds Opening Day Attractions 50 Years Later
As you’ve probably heard, Carowinds is celebrating the park’s 50th anniversary in 2023. The park sits directly on the North and South Carolina border. And throughout the years it has evolved and grown into one of the nation’s premier amusement parks. It’s seen changes in ownership, the addition of a waterpark, and countless rides come and go. Some of those “goings” hurt more than others (RIP Thunder Road). But most have made way for bigger and better attractions. Fury 325 is regarded as one of the best roller coasters in the country. The Copperhead Strike is the park’s newest roller coaster. And this year they added the new Aeronautical Landing portion to the area near Afterburn. That ride will always be Top Gun to me, a name that was retired when Paramount sold the park to Cedar Fair. And I remember being too small to ride it when it first opened, but I’ll never forget how massive it seemed at the time. Now it’s one of the smaller at least in height, rides in the park. But even with all this change, some things at Carowinds remain the same from the park’s opening day in 1973 including a few attractions.
So what did Carowinds look like, on March 31, 2023? Here’s a look at some of the Carowinds opening day attractions you can still experience. And keep reading for a lookback and some of the rides I wish you could still ride!
