Charlotte Police Museum Opens
Charlotte is paying tribute to its law enforcement history by opening the CMPD Expo and Historical Museum.
Up until 1993, the Charlotte Police Department and the Mecklenburg County Police Department operated as separate agencies. Their merger became official on Oct.1, 1993. Since then, the CMPD has amassed artifacts and memorabilia fit for display, and that’s what the Expo and Historical Museum is all about.
Thirty years after the merge, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police chief Johnny Jennings praised the decision.
“The result of the consolidation was a more robust police department with increased resources to serve all areas of our community,” Jennings said in a statement. “All of the staff for the past 30 years has impacted the department that we are today. The vision of the former chiefs has helped lead the CMPD into a new era of advanced technology, increased community outreach and pushing the boundaries of service through innovation.”
The CMPD Expo and Historical Museum is housed uptown near the intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets. It is open to the public beginning today.
