These Mecklenburg Groups Will Receive $6 Million In Opioid Settlement Money
Mecklenburg County officials have named the organizations that will receive $6 million in funding from the National Opioid Settlement.
More than a dozen groups will receive a share of the funding, aimed at heading off the opioid crisis on a local level. Organizations were chosen by Mecklenburg’s Board of County Commissioners to provide help in three major battles against opioid addiction — prevention, treatment and recovery. Opioid overdoses killed more than 230 people in Mecklenburg County in 2021.
Thompson Child and Family Focus, Children’s Home Society of NC and Project 658 will receive funding to assist early intervention. Charlotte Community Health Clinic and Amity Medical Group will receive funding for evidence-based addiction treatment. Hope Haven, Charlotte Area Fun and National Center on Institutions and Alternatives will receive support for employment-related services.
The opioid settlement also covers recovery housing support and recovery support services. Those agencies include Hope Homes Recovery Services, Queen City Harm Reduction, McLeod Center for Well Being, Smart Recovery USA, Carolina Cares Partnership, Amity Medical Group and Oxford House.
The money has taken nearly two years to arrive. The National Opioid Settlement was announced in July 2021. The historic $50 billion agreement was forged by a coalition of state attorneys general. Mecklenburg County will continue receiving $6 million per year for another seventeen years.
