Maniac
I’m not quite ready to say that there is NOTHING good on conventional, network, TV these days, but I AM willing to say that there is just a glut of exceptionally interesting things to watch on outlets like Amazon and Netflix.
For example, I stumbled across a trailer this morning for a limited series on Netflix starring Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Sally Field, and Justin Theroux called, “Maniac.”
Blown away.
Upon further research, this is what I’ve discovered.
Maniac follows Annie Landsberg (Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Hill), two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons. Annie’s seemingly stuck in neutral, unable to move forward and fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister. Owen is the son of wealthy New York industrialists who has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia. Neither of their lives have turned out quite right, and the promise of a new, radical kind of pharmaceutical treatment—a sequence of pills its inventor, Dr. James K. Mantleray, claims can repair anything about the mind, be it mental illness or heartbreak-solving all their problems permanently. Oh yeah, and they are assured no complications or side-effects whatsoever.
That always works out, right? Anyway, check this out and mark your calendar for Sept. 21 on Netflix.
