Dishin’ With Debbie-Stuck On A Crutch?
This past weekend we were out with friends for some drinks and incredible Thai food.
We moved the gathering to one of our favorite wine bars in Matthews, and that’s where my friend shared with us her husband’s unusual “crutch phrase.” That’s what we in the broadcast industry have been cautioned about by many a boss.
Pretty much everyone has one of two words or phrases they insert into the conversation as a kind of stall tactic while their brain reaches for the next word. We don’t even realize we’re doing it, but others notice it and are apparently sometimes annoyed by it! Her husband’s phrase is “what not.” Most of us might say “um” or “ya know.” But “what not?” Where does that even come from? And her observation was that he doesn’t even use it in context. It’s so random. For example: “I put gas in the car on the way to work and what not….then I got a call from my boss and what not.” We were laughing so hard because we realized that while we were sitting there, he had just said it three or four more times.
And, it reminded me of one of my favorite movie characters…Cher from Clueless…she’s like the queen of crutch phrases. Like whatever…watch and enjoy!
