The End Of Cheating At Monopoly?
FAIRFAX, CA - FEBRUARY 06: In this photo illustration, Monopoly board game pieces are displayed on February 6, 2013 in Fairfax, California. Toy maker Hasbro, Inc. announced today that fans of the board game Monopoly voted in an online contest to eliminate the iron playing figure and replace it with a cat figure. The cat gamepiece received 31 percent of the online votes to beat out four other contenders, a robot, diamond ring, helicopter and guitar. (Photo illustration by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)
Board games were big business in my house growing up-especially on rainy days and holidays. The two biggies? Scrabble and Monopoly.
My mom was a STICKLER for the rules-principally in Scrabble (she’s a teacher after all). My Dad? Well, not so much.
He loved Monopoly, and he loved to be the banker. And he never ran out of money. And he always seemed to win. I always thought he cheated as the banker.
Well, those days are fast coming to an end, as the 2019 edition swaps paper money for a digital banker.
The new version has a large top hat in the center of the board. When pressed, “Mr. Monopoly” will handle the financial transaction via spoken commands.
No paper bills? No way to pocket a few on the side!
The game hits store shelves on July 1st for about $30.
