Union County Teen Sings With Randy Travis
One of the things that we’ve always found charming and endearing about living in the south is the civic pride people feel for the cities/towns they come from-regardless of size.
Just about every one of them has some sort of town festival/fair/or event that occurs on an annual basis. In the case of Marshville, NC (in Union County), it’s the Randy Travis Music Festival.
Formerly known as the “Boll Weevil Festival,” this event features arts & crafts, exhibitors, food, and a “Randy Travis” sing-a-like contest (more on that in a sec) to honor Marshville’s favorite son, born Randy Traywick. The country music icon was present and accounted for to share a smile and a picture with all who wanted. Following the massive stroke in 2013, Randy has (miraculously) been able to recover some of his vocal ability (he’s able to speak somewhat), but will never be what he once was. That hasn’t stopped him from sharing his time with his family, friends, and fans, tho.
And that takes us back to the contest.
Sam Robinson is a senior at Parkwood High School, and is a friend of our son. Sam is the closest thing to a teenage Renaissance man we know. He’s into academics, golf, politics, business, history, movies, basketball, music, and I know I’m leaving out at least a half dozen other interests.
Anyway, Sam decides, “Hey, I can sing like Randy Travis,” so to Marshville he went this past Saturday. After competing in the contest, he took a gamble and asked the country music icon, if he could sing with him. The answer?
“Sure!”
Sam was on cloud nine when he came over to the house late Saturday afternoon. And who wouldn’t be?
