Debbie’s Hometown Hits Big Time With Netflix’s “Cheer”
When your hometown is best described as 60 miles south of Dallas on the interstate with a population that’s dwindling by the day (seemingly), the last thing you expect to see is it achieving fame on Netflix.
However, that’s exactly what’s happened to my Corsicana, Texas, and the show “Cheer.” “Cheer” follows the exploits of the cheerleading squad at Navarro Junior College (where I spent one year after high school before transferring to the University of North Texas), nationally reknown for their award-winning squad.
Full disclosure, I was born and raised in Corsicana and had NO CLUE about this squad’s national reputation. Their exploits are all the buzz on Netflix with this 6-part series documenting their road to the National Finals competition.
One bone of contention. I’m not sure why Navarro is being pronounced Nuh-var-oh, it’s Nuh-vare-oh, but that’s just a personal pet peeve that has nothing to do with the drama.
The show is great. Check it out.
Oh, and as an added bonus recently, the “Cheer” squad performed, and were rewarded on, “Ellen.”
