What Did Dolly REALLY Think Of Whitney’s Version Of Her Classic?
I’ve had the wonderful fortune to be around some of the most talented songwriters in country music history. To a person, they love their songs…and they are flattered when artists choose to record them. More so, they are HONORED when artists choose to cover the songwriters own recorded version of a song.
Just ask Lee Brice how he felt about Garth Brooks singing, “More Than A Memory.”
Perhaps the GREATEST cover of a song in music history is Whitney Houston’s rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” from the soundtrack to the movie, “The Bodyguard” (in which Houston starred).
The world loved it…but how did Dolly feel?
Recently, she was interviewed in Britain on “The Graham Norton Show,” “They asked me if they could use it and I forgot about it until I was driving home and I heard this voice come on the radio. It kind of rang a bell, but it didn’t hit because she was kind of talking it, and all of a sudden it went into the ‘I will always love you’ bit and I had to pull over to listen to it. It was one of the most overwhelming feelings I have ever had to hear it done so well, so beautifully, and so big. She took it and made it so much more that what it would ever have been. It was such a joy as a songwriter. I don’t think I will have a bigger thrill, ever.”
