“Young Guns 3” How Is This Even Possible?
Okay, I’m not altogether sure how this is possible. Follow me here. In 1988, a really cool western came out featuring some of the young, hot stars of Hollywood: Emilio Estevez (pictured above), Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, and Dermot Mulroney. “Young Guns” was a take on an origin story of Billy The Kid (Estevez). And it was GREAT!
In fact, the movie was so great that two years later, we got “Young Guns 2.” Granted this was a little more difficult as the only characters who were alive at the end of the first were Estevez, Sutherland, and Phillips, but still. It was really good and featured the music of Jon Bon Jovi.
So, that’s it. Two good, action packed westerns for a generation that you wouldn’t have thought would have been into seeing a western movie. Well, you’d think that would be it. Lou Diamond Phillips has said that “Young Guns” writer John Fusco and Emilio Estevez are actually working on a script for “Young Guns 3.” “I got that phone call about a year ago. I know that Emilio has been working on it, and what’s even more encouraging is that John Fusco is working with him.” Now, I’m all about suspending disbelief, BUT…first of all lets talk about the “Young…” part. Kiefer Sutherland is now 54, Phillips is 59, and Estevez is 58. Which leads to the second mental hurdle for me. Billy the Kid, again-played by Estevez in these films died at the age of 21! They pull this off, this is Hollywood magic indeed!
