North Carolina Residents Will Soon Be Able To Buy The First Legal Marijuana In The State
North Carolina residents will soon be able to buy the first legal marijuana in the state. According to WCNC Charlotte, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians will begin issuing cards to purchase marijuana this week.
The cards that will be issued are medical marijuana cards. These cards will give many people the opportunity to buy marijuana from the first legal batch in North Carolina.
People in North Carolina are now allowed to buy marijuana due to a vote in September that passed. The law allows marijuana to be bought and used on tribal land. At first, only tribal members will be able to receive these cards, however, other North Carolina residents will be able to apply soon after.
Having small amounts of marijuana within the Eastern Band’s Qualla Boundary was made legal by the tribe in 2021. Over the past few years, the tribe also formed a medical marijuana structure, which has made it the only place where you can legally purchase marijuana in NC.
It has been estimated that, if legalized, North Carolina could make up to $15.1 million off of medical marijuana. By 2028, it’s estimated by lawmakers that that number could jump all the way up to $44.4 million. An example of legal recreational marijuana sales bringing money to the state is the more than $325 million Colorado made in 2022 off of cannabis tax revenue.
