From Waiting Tables In This North Carolina Town To Starring on Broadway
It is always fun to watch a hometown boy reach the stars. That is exactly what is happening to Phillip Johnson Richardson.
You may have been waited on by Phillip. He was a waiter at Afton Pub and Pizza in Concord this past summer. Then the bright lights of Broadway called. He tells the Charlotte Observer,“I love my hometown,” he said, “but obviously that (job) was not what I wanted to do.”
Richardson won a principle role in “The Wiz” in the high profile pre Broadway national tour revival of the musical. Richardson is 27 years old and he graduated from Charlotte’s Northwest School of the Arts. Soon after graduating from college in 2018 big things started happening for Phillip. He landed a role in the Chicago cast of ‘Hamilton’.
An injury reportedly caused Phillip to head back home to Charlotte. But he recovered and got back on track. Being a part of ‘The Wiz’, the production will head into Charlotte next week at the Belk Theater. The musical launched a national tour back in September.
