Kelsey Grammer Wasn’t The First Choice To Play Frazier Crane
Kelsey Grammer has played the role of Frasier Crane for nearly 40 years. Kelsey Grammer wasn’t the first choice to play Frazier Crane.
The character was originally a recurring role on the NBC mega-hit Cheers and was only meant to last a few episodes. Instead, Grammer’s character became a series regular for the remainder of the show’s 11-season run before spinning off into his own series, Frasier, for an additional 11 years.
The producers of Cheers had their sights set on another actor at first, John Lithgow. The role had been written specifically for the famed character actor. However, Lithgow was not interested.
Even after Cheers ended its 11-season run in May 1993, Grammer was not done with Dr. Frasier Crane. Collider.com said, the following fall, Frasier debuted on NBC. The spin-off won a record-breaking 37 Primetime Emmy Awards, four of which were rewarded to Grammer for his performance. The series ended its run in May 2004
I wonder if the series would have performed as well with John Lithgow in the lead. He is a very funny actor but sometimes chemistry is everything. He certainly missed out on a big payday from the series.
