Sextortion Schemes Rising in South Carolina
What is sextortion? According to the dictionary, it is the practice of extorting money or favors from someone by threatening to expose their sexual activity. Sextortion schemes are on the rise in South Carolina. It’s also on the rise in North Carolina. And it is threatening and even taking lives.
According to Channel 9, technology is helping scammers target teenagers online and using artificial intelligence to extort them. The good news is more people are getting arrested for this. Just this past week law enforcement in Rock Hill, South Carolina arrested a man. He is accused of releasing private photos of a woman and then threatening to release more if she didn’t pay.
The man is now facing criminal sexual exploitation charges. According to authorities, they are getting more and more of these reports, many of them for children under the age of 18. According to Channel 9 in Charlotte; ” FBI reports show that from 2021 to 2022 there has been a 200% increase in sextortion cases in South Carolina and a 600% increase in North Carolina”.
South Carolina State Representative Brandon Guffey reportedly lost his son Gavin. Gavin was reportedly the victim of sextortion. It seems like every day you hear of someone like Gavin, a bright and shining young star, ending their life because of this kind of extortion. Because of this, South Carolina now has “Gavin’s Law”. “Gavin’s Law” makes the crime of sextortion a felony in the Palmetto State.
