More than 100 employees losing jobs at this North Carolina business. This Atlanta based packaging company is shutting its doors at their Charlotte plant.
According to the Charlotte Observer, Graphic Packing International plans to close their plant on Westinghouse Boulevard on March 31. This is according to a document filed recently with the North Carolina Department of Commerce. This means 112 layoffs will occur on March 11.
Sue Appleyard is a spokesperson with Graphic Packing International and she tells The Charlotte Observer what the plant produces. The Charlotte plant makes paper-based folding carton packages for food and other consumer products. Appleyard tells our source,“After an assessment of the company’s overall converting portfolio, it was decided to consolidate Charlotte’s production into our broader network of plants”. Oh man, that is a tough statement to hear. No One wants to hear that from an employer.
The good news is, the company plans to help those employees find new jobs. Graphic Packing plans to provide outplacement services. Employees can also apply for other jobs at Graphic Packing International. More than 100 employees losing jobs at this North Carolina Business. Another branch of the company is close. GPI is a Fortune 500 company and there is another plant in Pineville, North Carolina.
The company is an old one. It has been around for over 100 years and has more than 24,000 employees around the world. Graphic Packing International also has offices in Winston Salem and Lumberton. Charlotte is not the only place they have had to close shop. According to the Charlotte Observer they had to close a 100 year old plant in Iowa. 85 people lost their jobs at that locations. They also closed a plant in Indiana with 70 job cuts.
