Robert Downey Jr On What Iron Man’s Final Words ALMOST Were
“Avengers: Endgame” is one of the greatest superhero movies of all time and one of the most financially successful movies ever. It put a bow on an entire series of adventures that had begun some 11 years earlier on screen. And its ending was perfect. Robert Downey Jr.’s “Iron Man,” sacrifices himself to stop the evil “Thanos” and save the world. And he does it with a snap of the fingers and four words, “I am Iron Man.”
It was the perfect closing to the circle that was opened with 2008’s “Iron Man” that ended with the utterance of those four words albeit in an entirely different context.
However, what I didn’t know what that as perfect as the ending was, it was almost entirely different. RDJ was a recent guest on the Hypocondriator Podcast and completely spilled the tea on what the script called for:
“Correct answer is ‘I am Iron Man,’ but I had so many alt lines that I wanted to put forward. Oh god, let me think. They were all super smart-ass lines like I was trying to, y’know, dumb stuff like, ‘You are so f—ed’ or whatever. You know what, I’ll have to go back to my notes… I get the Infinity Stones and then have the power to snap and have whatever I wanna have happen–Oh, tha- I was gonna say ‘Oh, snap.’ [The alternate lines were] too smart-ass, and it was the whole arc of the character. It was, I think… maybe one of our great editors’ ideas, or one of the writers to say we need to go right back to the first film, and have his dying words be the words of his origin….We love a bookend.”
