2 North Carolina ‘Seafood Shacks’ Among the Top 35 In The United States
What is a seafood shack? While there is no clear definition, I imagine it is a place you can walk up and order your seafood. Sit outside and enjoy it or dine inside. 2 North Carolina seafood shacks are among the top 35 in the United States.
The website 24/7 Wall Street scoured the country for the best seafood shacks. I love going to them because they are generally less formal than a seafood restaurant. They may even be less formal than a good ol southern fish camp. You can come right off the beach, order and sit on a picnic table outside and enjoy fish right out of the ocean, probably caught that morning.
So how did the website go about determining the best seafood shacks in the United States. They used Yelp, Cheapism, Men’s Journal and other sources. It was generally found that the shorter the distance to the ocean, the fresher the fish.
I am proud to say that one of the two seafood shacks among the top 35 in the United States is one of my personal favorites. My sister Linda lives about three miles from Calabash Seafood Hut in Calabash, North Carolina. She told me about it last year and now we don’t leave the area without going. Everyone around here knows Calabash is the Seafood Capital of the World. Do not leave Calabash without going to the Calabash Seafood Hut at least once. Do yourself a favor and get the Fried Flounder sandwich. You will thank me later.
Topsail Beach, North Carolina is home to one of the best seafood shacks in the United States. Check out Lewis Seafood Shack while you are there. Fried Shrimp and fish tacos are the specialty there. Seafood shacks are my jam, next time I am in Topsail Beach I will be trying this place.

Speaking of fish camps!
These Are The 5 Best Fish Camps In North Carolina
One of my friends was visiting from another part of the country and wanted to go to a seafood restaurant one night. Oh, I said, let me take you to my favorite fish camp in the area. She had no idea what I meant by “fish camp”. Here are 5 of the best fish camps in North Carolina according to Yelp.
Let’s get back to that question, “What is a fish camp”? It is different than seafood restaurants people in other parts of the country are used to. Southern Living magazine describes fish camps this way:”The original fish camps date back to before World War II. They were little more than rudimentary waterside kitchens, either outdoors or in smaller spots along riverbanks or coastal sounds, where fishermen could cook what they caught. Some of the fishermen saw entrepreneurial opportunities and hired cooks to help out. Over time, these camps evolved into no-frills seafood restaurants, a few of which remain in business today. Some are in the same locations as the old camps, while others moved a little closer to town.”
And the origins of fish camps are closer than even I knew until I did some research. This is what google has to say about the history of fish camps.” The earliest were established along the Catawba River in South and North Carolina in the 1930s and 1940s and began as sheds where anglers could fry their fresh catches. And while most restaurants purchase their fish from seafood wholesalers and farms, fish camps continue to be found along waterways.”
Well, lets get to it, here are the top five fish camps, according to Yelp ( some are listed in Charlotte magazine). Ironically the ones we are featuring are located right where it all began.
