Using The Internet Might Actually Be Good For You
There has been a lot of talk about how the internet, more specifically social media, is a bad thing. Along with this a lot of content has been published on things like limiting screen time and digital detoxes. However a new study was released in May of 2024 to the journal Technology, Mind, and Behavior that challenges all of these ideas according to GoodNet.
The lead study author, Dr. Matti Vuorre is assistant professor of social psychology at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He told CNN, “nearly everyone seems to think that internet-powered technologies are driving an epidemic of ill-being and mental health problems. Our study of over two million individuals from 168 countries runs contrary to this idea.”
This study found that internet access and usage is actually consistently linked to a more positive wellbeing and a better mental state. For this study the researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) looked at data gathered starting all the way back in 2006 up until 2021 from people who were 15-99 years old around the world.
The study didn’t look specifically at social media, which is a big target by those who think screen time should be limited. Instead the study took a broader approach and looked at internet access as a whole. The study posed the question “do individuals who have access and actively use the internet report greater or lower levels of wellbeing than those who do not?”
The researchers found that 85 percent of the cases that they looked at had positive experiences and only 5 percent were negative. The negative responses were mostly from women who were 15 to 24.
Dr Ruth Plackett, senior research fellow at University College London states: “We do know young people can be exposed to harmful content on these [social media] platforms which may give more negative associations with internet use.”
Overall, the study found that those who actively use the internet usually have a greater social wellbeing and higher life satisfaction.
