Outer Banks UFO House Burns To The Ground
We have lived here in the Charlotte area for almost 17 years now. In that time, we’ve taken MANY trips to the mountains, the sandhills, the Yadkin Valley wine country, and the beach. The one place we’ve never been, and want to go, is The Outer Banks. Movies and TV shows we’re fans of have filmed there and there are plenty of great restaurants to frequent as well. Honestly, the drive is what has held us back. All that being said, an attraction to the area that I’d always heard about, and wanted to see, is now an impossibility after last week.
The Frisco, NC, fire department posted the following to their Facebook Page on Wednesday night: “The ‘Spaceship’ is no more.” This caption accompanied pictures of the burned-out hull of what looks like a UFO. James Bagwell is the owner of the home and claims it was “the second-most photographed thing in Dare County.” “The only other thing is the lighthouse itself,” Bagwell told PBS. Later in the piece, Bagwell referred to the landmark as the “Futuro House” and that it had been in the Outer Banks for more than 50 years. Hmmm. A little research turned up there were several “Futuro Houses” built around the US in the 1960s and 1970s. Apparently, plans to do so were readily available. The Futuro House was conceived by Matti Suuronen in 1968 as a “portable” ski chalet. I can see that. However, like the rest of the world, I also see something that “little green men” would fly around. You have to imagine the time. It’s the 1960s. The space race is at its height. We would put men on the moon the next year. The obsession with “what’s out there” must have been HUGE. I guess, if you had the money and were a little off-center, it would have been a fun novelty to have as a second home at the time? Anyway, the blueprints are below. Which begs this question. If the plans are out there, does Mr. Bagwell rebuild?
