Real IDs In South And North Carolina-Does Everyone Actually Need One?
Seems like forever since we got the news that everyone would eventually need a “real ID” for air travel. Deadlines got pushed a few times during the pandemic. However, this one will probably stick. Airlines start requiring the real ID May 3, 2023. So, here’s the scoop on real IDs in South and North Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles reports at this point, only half of South Carolinians have theirs. The department continues to push for compliance before the deadline.
According to WSPA, the SCDMV brought the DMV to Spartanburg International Airport to make registering easier for folks on the go. Of course, to get the ID, you need all the proper documentation. Find requirements at the SCDMV website. You need a current passport or birth certificate, your social security number and two physical proofs of your current South Carolina address. And, the same goes for folks in North Carolina. More about requirements and appointments can be found on their website as well. So, that’s the how and when on real IDs in South and North Carolina.
But, do you really need the ID with the little gold star? You do not need the real ID to drive, vote, apply for benefits, enter a federal facility that doesn’t require an ID, access hospitals or participate in law enforcement proceedings such as jury duty. And, if you have a valid U.S. passport, military ID or other federal ID accepted at airport security, you can use it instead of changing to the Real ID. I actually said last year when I got my SC driver’s license, I liked the picture so much I’d never change it. LOL. It’s quite rare that I take a good picture at the DMV. But, if you’re planning to travel, just take a look online and decide if you need to switch over. Because, even tho I technically could use my passport, it might be easier to take the plunge.
So, if you plan on traveling in the new year, get your real ID and check out some of these top cities!
