Blake Shelton Reminds Me Why I Love Country Music
Blake Shelton may be best known now as a coach on the biggest talent competition on television. He may be well known as the husband of one of the most iconic pop singers of the twenty-first century. However, a video that I discovered on his Instagram account reminded me that at his core, Blake Shelton is a country music artist. The post is captioned, “Back in the day I wanted this song to be a single so bad I put it on two different albums. We never got to it and I still regret it. Thought I’d dig it out for y’all. It’s called “I Don’t Care.” The two albums, by the way, are “Pure BS” and “Startin’ Fires.”
I always said, you want to know if a country singer truly has the goods? Get rid of the big stages and lights. Pull out a chair, hand them an acoustic guitar and say, “Make me feel something.” Within seconds, you’ll know one way or another. The best songs are the ones that when you hear them, you are immediately transported back to a place or time in your own life. “I Don’t Care” is the kind of song. Man or woman, chances are you’ve had that person who will always have a small piece of your heart, no matter what you try to tell yourself.
And this song also reminds me why albums are so important. I know the music business has changed. I get economically why some artists don’t even care about putting out an album anymore. Just put out singles and people will consume your songs one at a time. However, an album usually has ten or more songs. Only a few of them will be “singles” that you hear on the radio all the time. In those others, you’ll find gems that you’ll play over and over again. Those are the songs that make you fall in love with an artist and his music. Like “I Don’t Care” just did, again, for Blake Shelton and me.
