The North Carolina Department Of Transportation Is Hiring
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is hiring.
With a 20% job vacancy rate statewide, the agency in charge of the state’s roads is in serious need of qualified employees. And it’s not all asphalt and backhoes. NCDOT employees do everything from designing, building and maintaining road to helping you renew your driver’s license.
The agency’s director of human resources told Spectrum News the pandemic had a big effect on hiring. Job vacancy rates jumped from 18% in 202 to 23% in 2022.
“There were times where we would have hundreds of applicants that would come through qualified for positions,” HR director Amanda Olive said. “And now we’re just not seeing that.” Officials say retirements and promotions have also affected the vacancy rate.
To generate interest in careers with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the agency has started a high school internship program. The year-round initiative gives students an opportunity to work as a paid, part-time intern at NCDOT. Students can get hands-on work experience, learn about employment opportunities at NCDOT, and broaden their perspective of public service and state government employment. High schoolers throughout North Carolina are encouraged to apply as there are numerous positions available at various NCDOT divisions and units.
