NC High School Treated For Bed Bugs But Parents Weren’t Notified
A North Carolina high school was treated for bed bugs last week, and now parents are upset that they were not notified. The school system says they are protecting the privacy of the student. Many parents aren’t happy about it.
It happened at West Cabarrus High School in Concord last Thursday. A spokesperson for Cabarrus County Schools told WJZY-TV that the bed bugs were found inside a student’s backpack. That led to maintenance staff searching and treating other areas of the school for the bugs. The student’s school bus was also inspected.
Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on blood, usually at night. Bed bug bites can cause rashes, redness, and allergic symptoms. Although they don’t typically carry disease, bed bug bites can cause a fever. Getting rid of bed bugs is often troublesome. According to Wikipedia, bed bugs can survive for up to 300 days without feeding.
Now, some parents want to know why they were not notified about the bed bug exposure so they could take steps to guard against it.
“In order to protect the privacy of the student, Cabarrus County Schools does not produce schoolwide messaging in the case of an isolated incident,” the school district said in a statement.
