Tim McGraw And Faith Hill Sued For $5 Million
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill (along with songwriter Ed Sheeran) were sued for five million dollars for musical copywrite infringement. In other words, “copying” someone else’s song. Now, before you think Tim and Faith are unique in this predicament, this happens ALL the time. One of the most famous cases in country music was when Kenny Loggins sued Garth Brooks. Kenny’s song was “Conviction of the Heart.”
Garth’s? “Standing Outside The Fire.”
As is the eventual result with most of the cases, this one was “settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.” The same is true with Tim and Faith, but here’s the background so you can decide for yourself. The song in question is called, “The Rest of Our Life.”
Songwriters Sean Carey and Beau Golden alleged Sheeran copied their song written for Jasmine Rae titled “When I Found You.” The tune was a hit in Australia two years earlier (2016). Carey and Golden were seeking $5 million in damages as well as a running royalty and an award for attorney’s fees. Yeah, right. Dream on. I think it sucks that Tim and Faith got dragged on this. All they did was sing the song. They didn’t have anything to do with the writing.
How did this situation resolve itself? You guessed it. Settled out of court this month for an undisclosed sum. So, the only debate left is between folks like you and me arguing as to whether there was ever a case to be made here or not.
