Happy Hour In North Carolina Could Become Legal If New Bill Succeeds
I guess I never realized happy hours in North Carolina were illegal. But, a bill introduced this week in the general assembly hopes to change that. If the new bill succeeds, happy hour in North Carolina could finally become legal. State Representative Jason Saine of Lincoln presented the bill pushing to legalize happy hour in the state. It’s known as House Bill 94. And, under the bill, bars and restaurants would be able to get a permit for $100. In doing so, the businesses could then offer discounts on drinks. Furthermore, the bill allows multiple drinks to be sold for one price. And the establishment could also offer cents-off coupons. So, will the new bill succeed in making happy hour legal in North Carolina? Legislators plan discussion over the coming months concerning the bill.
So, I wondered how far back North Carolina banned happy hours. Apparently house bill 1135 banned the practice in 1985. That was also one year after the National Minimum Drinking Age Act raised the age to 21. And, since then businesses may only change the price of an item if it’s for the entire day. But, if this new bill legalizing happy hour passes, that would change in July of 2023. Also, House Bill 94 has bipartisan support. And, it comes following years of complaints from bar owners who complain that the happy hour ban is outdated, according to WCNC. North Carolina is only one of 17 states deemed as “liquor control states.” So, that means these states have laws in place appointing the state as the overseer of sale of alcohol at establishments. Therefore, many businesses in the state certainly benefit from the possibility of change. Will the new bill succeed in making happy hour in North Carolina legal? We’ll keep you posted.
