Kidnapped Girl Found Safe In North Carolina 6 Years Later
This is one of those stories that I find stunning. Kayla Unbehaun was nine years old when she was abducted, kidnapped by her non-custodial mother, Heather in July of 2017. The two of them were apparently able to disappear. Now, 6 years later, the two of them have been found safe and sound here in North Carolina.
I don’t find the abduction stunning. Statistics will say that the overwhelming majority of child abductions are perpetrated by family members/known persons. No, it’s the getting away with it that I cannot fathom. It’s not like this happened in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, or even the 1980s. These were all years, pre-computer. I could see someone able to not leave a paper trail in his/her wake. Not today. Between cameras everywhere and financial transactions being instantaneously documented electronically, I find Heather Unbehaun’s ability to do what she did, impossible.
Kayla’s father, Ryan, says that Heather had every other weekend visitation with their daughter back in 2017. After a July 4 camping trip that year. Neither returned.
Heather Unbehaun has now been arrested and is being held in a Buncombe County, North Carolina jail. She’s awaiting extradition back to Elgin, Illinois where she faces kidnapping charges. Heather’s bond is $250,000.
Kayla Unbehaun has now been reunited with her father. They are asking for privacy at this time as they try to become acquainted with each other again. As a parent, I cannot imagine the nightmare that Ryan has lived through or overwhelming joy and relief at discovering his baby girl is alive and well.
