This Is South Carolina’s Safest Place To Live And Here’s Why
When we look for places to live with our family, a number of factors go into the decision, including safety. And, that’s why a story I saw about South Carolina’s safest place to live caught my eye. Then, I learned I actually reside in South Carolina’s safest place to live.
And, it’s none other than Fort Mill, South Carolina in York County. MoneyGeek looked at more than 1000 towns in the nation. They examined crime data from the FBI to come up with their list. So, it seems Fort Mill landed at number 1 on the list of smaller cities with lower crime rates. The study looked at cities with populations between 30,000 and 100,000.
The MoneyGeek categories examined were violent crime rate, property crime rates, crime cost per capita and total crime costs. According to their report, “In addition to direct costs from loss of property, services for victims and policing corrections, residents of higher crime locales often pay higher rates on car insurance and renters insurance.”
So, I relocated to the Fort Mill/Indian Land, South Carolina area a couple of years ago. At the time, we simply wanted to move to a desirable spot in South Carolina because our son attends college in Conway, South Carolina. And, if you’ve ever priced out of state tuition at universities, you know it’s highway robbery. Therefore, it made sense to get the in state rate if possible.
And, Fort Mill was and is booming. There’s plenty of growth. But, it doesn’t seem too crowded yet. Plus, where we live is super convenient to shopping and all the amenities we need without a huge drive to reach them. However, we do still commute to Charlotte, North Carolina for work. But, we’ve always had a 30-40 minute commute as long as I can remember no matter where we live.
But, even though Fort Mill is number one when it comes to safety in South Carolina, it ranks 57th when compared to others across the nation on the list of 1000. MoneyGeek’s report says Fort Mill earned the top South Carolina spot because of its low crime related costs and the low violent crime rate. The crime cost per capita is $153. It didn’t score as well when it comes to burglary and theft.

These South Carolina Cities Are The Most Dangerous Of All The Carolinas
There is nothing more important than personal safety. Especially as a woman. Like it or not there are just certain things I won’t do. Things like pumping gas at night, rolling my window down in my car for any reason other than a drive-thru, or engaging with anyone I don’t know who approaches me in places like a parking lot. Most apartment complexes won’t rent first-floor apartments to women either. These are just some things guys don’t have to worry about. And I wish I didn’t either. But unfortunately, the world we live in makes women have to be super vigilant and aware of our surroundings. My personal safety just takes priority. Even though most of the Carolinas are fairly safe, bad things can happen anywhere. But there are some places where crime is more common than others. So what are the most dangerous cities in South Carolina?
NeighborhoodScout conducted the research to answer that question. And it may not be the answer you are expecting. Their research highlighted the 100 most dangerous cities in America. These are cities with a population of 25,000 or more people. The rankings are based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents. For the purpose of this list, Neighborhood Scout considers violent crimes to be rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. According to their methodology, “the data used for this research are the number of violent crimes reported to have occurred in each city, and the population of each city.”
A total of 9 Carolina cities made this list. 4 of the most dangerous cities were in South Carolina, while 5 were in North Carolina. The most dangerous city in the US overall? That was Bessemer Alabama, followed by Monroe, Louisiana. You can read the full list via Neighborhood Scout here or keep reading to see the South Carolina cities that made the list.
