3 Ways You Can Lower Your Grocery Bill As Prices Increase
Inflation is causing everyone to feel its effects right now and the prices at grocery stores are no exception. Grocery prices are currently up by 12% from last year and some items are up even higher than that according to Healthline.
These prices are significantly higher on foods like eggs, beef, and milk, which most people buy for their homes at all times. The good news is Healthline has a few tips for those who want to cut back on grocery costs.
1. Make plans
Creating a grocery list before going to the store can help you save a lot of money. This helps by preventing impulse purchases and prevents accidently purchasing things you already have.
When you only buy items from your list you’re more likely to actually make use of what you have on hand. It’s estimated that on average households throw away about 30% of the food items they buy.
Having food plans for the week and sticking to them helps prevent takeout purchases and impulse grocery purchases, which adds up.
2. Look for sales
Some people already spend time looking for coupons and sales, but if you don’t there’s no better time to start. If you combine coupons and sales in stores you’ll be able to save a lot more than you expect.
If you shop online you can even add things like virtual coupons or you can filter by what’s currently on sale. If there’s a store you go to often it’s also extremely helpful to make sure you’re signed up for reward points if they offer them
3. Forget what you’ve heard about “convenience”
It is true that we tend to pay more for things that are convenient like pre-cut meats or already made sauces. However, this doesn’t mean that we should always avoid these items. A lot of the time these convenient items actually pay off. This is because the convenience often prevents you from ordering take out or just letting the groceries go bad.
When it comes to creating meals we all need convenience every once in a while. This means that instead of avoiding it all together you should choose your convenience wisely and make sure you’re getting the most out of it.
Sometimes things like jarred sauce or pre chopped veggies aren’t much more expensive than other non-convenient items. This just means you need to be mindful of the prices and know when it’s worth it to you.
The Cost of Gasoline The Year You Were Born
In the midst of Russia’s war on Ukraine and sanctions against Russia levied by the United States and the European Union, gas prices are climbing. On March 6, 2022, the national average price of gas per gallon surpassed $4.00, inching closer by the day to topping the highest-recorded average of $4.114 set in 2008, according to AAA. Some industry experts project the national average to remain above $4.00 until November 2022.
For nearly every mile driven, American consumers find themselves inextricably linked to a complex global commodity that can have a major impact on the cost of cruising: fuel. But that may change in the coming decades. With electric vehicles becoming more common as the auto industry shifts to reduce its high impact on climate change, other sectors will be affected. In just a few decades, the new car market will look radically different than it does today, and the gas and oil industries, whose fortunes are tied to the auto industry, will also experience radical change.
Most of the time, both the highs and the lows of gas prices are out of drivers’ hands. During the Arab-Israeli War in 1973, Arab oil manufacturers banned exports to the U.S. due to their support of Israel, leading to a gas shortage and sky-high prices. In recent years, an increase in demand for oil in developing economies alongside an expansion in production from countries (like the U.S.) that once imported most of their oil, led to a sharp drop in oil prices. In the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, stay-at-home orders caused oil prices to crater as demand for oil bottomed out.
To find out more about how the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (last updated in August 2021), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2021 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
