NC State Grad Now A 2 Time Cheese Rolling Champion
Once wasn’t good enough for this NC State grad who is now a 2 time cheese rolling champion. Abby Lampe made history in 2022 when she won the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Race in Glouchester representing the red and white from NC State.
Lampe became an instant legend in Raleigh, she was recognized, cheese wheel and all, at a home football game. They put her face on t-shirts (I even bought one for my dad). And her picture? It’s hanging in Amedeo’s Italian Restaurant amongst the likes of Philip River, David Thompson, and countless other athletes from the school.
And over the weekend Lampe returned to England to compete once again in this most interesting of athletic competitions. She showed the world that her 2022 win wasn’t just luck by becoming the first-ever American woman to win the race twice in the event’s history.
2 Time Cheese Rolling Champion Abby Lampe
What is a Cheese Rolling champion? Good question, very good question. I myself asked this question 2 years ago. It’s a lot more athletic than it sounds at first.
Essentially participants race (or throw their body) down the 200-yard long hill chasing a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese. The first person to grab the cheese wheel? They are the cheese rolling champion. Exhibit A:
An old co-worker used to joke that I would cheer for NC State (my alma-mater) in any sport. And it couldn’t be more true. Is this something I would ever participate in? Not a chance. Will I celebrate this world championship with my fellow Wolfpack fans? One hundred percent.
I couldn’t be more proud of Abby Lampe representing NC State on a worldwide stage. When I say Go Pack always. I mean it. Can’t wait to see you in Carter Finley this fall Abby!
