Longtime Charlotte Barbeque Joint Reopens
It’s a story if we heard once, we heard a thousand times. And it’s not a happy one. You know how it goes. A family-owned restaurant thrives for years in the Queen City and then, Covid-19 hit. And the restaurant could not sustain and closed its doors. However, this time that story does indeed have a happy ending, or should I say, “new beginning.” Bubba’s Barbeque is back!
Bubba’s Barbecue closed at the beginning of the pandemic. It serves slow-cooked Eastern NC-style barbecue, with brisket, ribs and sides. https://t.co/RKaZxSeXoJ

Bubba’s has quite the history. Originally, it opened as “Jackson and Spoon’s Barbeque” (later simply, “Spoon’s Barbeque”) in 1963 on South Boulevard. Ralph Miller bought the joint in 1987 (along with all of its recipes), renamed it “Bubba’s Barbeque,” and moved it to Sunset Road. Since 1994, its Eastern North Carolina-style bbq was a Charlotte staple. Miller was forced to close the doors in September of 2020 (remember the common tale?), but quietly relaunched it four weeks ago. Bubba’s boasts a brand-new staff as well a new, pared-down menu. Speaking of which, you’ll find pulled chopped pork, St. Louis style ribs, and my beloved beef brisket (I could live off the stuff!). New side items include bacon broccoli salad and mac and cheese. Also, there is but one dessert. And let’s be honest, when it comes to dessert at a bbq joint, there can be only one: banana pudding!
As always, you’re welcome to dine-in at Bubba’s, but there’s also take-home options including family size Q for a crowd or meal deals that include your choice of bbq plus two sides and hush puppies. Bubba’s Barbeque is located at 4400 Sunset Rd., and is open Monday-Saturday, 11am-8pm.
