The thoughts of retirement loom over anyone of a certain age. And, the overwhelming fear that haunts us is money, or the lack of. After all, when the daily work grind ceases, so does the paycheck. But, there are still places you can enjoy those post career days without breaking the bank. And, one of our favorite laid back North Carolina towns made a list of bets places to retire with no savings.
According to GoBankingRates.com, around 40% of adults have next to nothing saved for retirement. Hey, I pass no judgement on anyone. We all struggle just to make it to the next paycheck these days. But, it is a bit terrifying as we age. However, after analyzing the 100 largest cities in the country with larger populations of folks 65 and older, Go Banking Rates ranked the best places to retire with no savings.
And, Pinehurst, North Carolina made the top 10 best places to retire with no savings. Of course, affordability of these spots is a huge contributing factor. But, a major plus among most on the list is no state taxes on Social Security benefits. And, among other stats, with a 65 and older population of nearly 40%, Pinehurst saw their average home value at nearly $500,000 in 2023. Groceries for the year rang in at an average cost of just over $4500, while annual healthcare costs were around $7500. Go Banking Rates examined other areas including property taxes, utilities and transportation, also.
So, that’s what we know about the numbers. But, what about the quality of life in Pinehurst? Well, it’s basically the home of golf if that’s your thing. And, it’s definitely my husband’s thing. He makes multiple trips a year to Pinehurst. Therefore, he’s familiar with how serene and beautiful the spot is. He describes it as a laid back true Southern town with that old school hospitality and charm. So, if we ever retire I guess Pinehurst hits our list of possibilities.
