Today is Kentucky Derby Day! And, for one Kentucky Derby horse owner the journey started in the Myrtle Beach area. Paul Lawson, a Conway, South Carolina native, views this race as more than a spectator event. Lawson co-owns” Confidence Game.” According to WMBF, the Derby horse takes off from the fourth gate at today’s race.
The Kentucky Derby horse owner belongs to Ocean Reef Racing. The group has multiple owners and currently has 16 horses. And, one of Lawson’s college friends heads the group. Of course, Lawson traveled to Churchill Downs this week for the big day. The horse is at 20-1 odds. But, Lawson likes his chances.
The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby takes place today. And, viewers can watch on NBC affiliates with coverage beginning as early as noon. Plus, with a Kentucky Derby horse owner having such close ties to the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area I think I might just have to play favorites.
So, don your Derby best duds and grab a mint julep. And, get ready to pull for Confidence Game in the fourth gate. After all, it’s quite the accomplishment to make it to this marquee race. 5 Mint Julep Variations to Try During the Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby is May 6. When the masses descend on Churchill Downs in their finest Derby duds (and hats), they’ll be ordering Mint Juleps like crazy.
Per the Kentucky Derby’s official website, “Each year, almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are served over the two-day period of Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs Racetrack. That’s a feat that requires more than 10,000 bottles of Old Forester Mint Julep Ready-to-Serve Cocktail, 1,000 pounds of freshly harvested mint and 60,000 pounds of ice.”
If you’re hosting a Derby party or are attending one, consider putting a spin on the classic cocktail with one of these five variations. Ingredients and instructions can be found in the videos below. Cheers!
