Having lived in the Carolinas for nearly 20 years now, I know firsthand how charming many spots can be. And, it seems HGTV agrees. Newberry, South Carolina made the HGTV list for most charming towns in America. Some often refer to them as “hidden gems.” However, with publicity like this they won’t stay hidden for long.
The HGTV list points out that Newberry, South Carolina is a college town with “lots of extras.” It’s home to Newberry College, a private liberal arts college. They highlight the historic Opera House as well as the regional architecture. And, one of my favorite “extras” mentioned was a winery and exceptional dining. In fact, Newberry, South Carolina is nicknamed “City of Friendly Folks.” And, that’s probably why it made HGTV’s list of 50 Most Charming Small Towns in America.
Now, I don’t know what, if any, scientific analysis went into the assembling of this particular list of most charming towns in America. However, whether it’s opinion or just good old fashioned get out and see the world for yourself data, I’m game to check out their suggestions.
And, in researching things to do in Newberry, South Carolina, we find the Wells Japanese Garden that many refer to as a good spot for a picnic or photo opp. Plus, if you feel adventurous, try the Palmetto Trailhead Lynch’s Woods passage. For the history buffs, there’s the Newberry Museum. And, finally I spotted the Enoree River Vineyards and Winery. Google reviews speak highly of the sangria slushies.
Also, doing a bit of digging I see Newberry, South Carolina has lots of unique shops and restaurants. So, we just might have to pay them a visit and see for ourselves why HGTV named Newberry, South Carolina to their most charming towns in America list. Find our more and see the full list.

These South Carolina Restaurants Were Nationally Recognized As Hidden Gems
There are restaurants that deservedly receive a lot of attention and publicity. And typically for great reason. But now it’s time to delve into some different restaurants. Not necessarily the newest or the trendiest, but definitely some of the best. And these three restaurants in South Carolina are wonderful hidden gems. They were named amongst the top 25 hidden gem restaurants on TripAdvisor’s recently released Best of the Best list. This list is nationwide so to have any restaurant included is impressive, but to have 3 of the 25 is certainly something to be proud of.
The most surprising part of this? The three restaurants recognized by TripAdvisor are in three different cities. Typically we see Charleston receiving this recognition time and time again. And while it’s deserved (and one of these places is in Charleston), it’s also nice to see other South Carolina cities getting some love! All three restaurants are on the coast though. Not only was South Carolina recognized North Carolina also had two restaurants named as the best of the best hidden gems. If you aren’t good at math- that 20% of the best restaurants are in one of the two Carolinas.
Other states that got some love include New York, Tennessee, and Florida. Each of those states had multiple restaurants make the list as well. How were these restaurants selected for this top 25 list from TripAdvisor? TripAdvisor says that the Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best restaurants have “a high volume of above-and-beyond reviews” from users over a 12-month period. Fewer than 1% of Tripadvisor’s 8 million listings are awarded Best of the Best. You can read the full list and more about the 3 South Carolina Hidden Gems Award winners here.
