Need Booze On Thanksgiving? Make A Run For The South Carolina Border
In case you’ve been living under a rock, Thanksgiving is Thursday. These next couple of days will be full of prep for eating and guests. There will be trips to the grocery store. Also, there will be trips to Wal Mart or Target to make sure you have the right towels and soaps in the guest room. One trip that is often overlooked but could be a necessity (depending on how well you get along with relatives) is a trip to the liquor store for spirited supplies.
Now some grocery stores across the Charlotte area may be open full or part time on Thursday, but Thanksgiving Day is one of the holidays that ABC stores across North Carolina are closed. This could be a disaster. I’ve been there. Your mom or mother-in-law steps just too far over the line and the only thing that is guaranteed to keep the peace (ie your mouth shut) is a quick nip. And there’s not a drop in sight. What to do?
Well, if you’re on the North Carolina side of the Charlotte area, then (to steal from a former popular ad campaign) you need to make a run for the border. Two of the best liquor stores in the area Southern Spirits on Charlotte Highway and The Sauce Monkey in Ft. Mill will both be open on Thanksgiving Day. Southern Spirits will be open 9-3 and The Sauce Monkey will be open on Turkey Day until 5pm.
Good to know, that in times of “emergency,” these are available, right?
Thanksgiving Traditions Southerners Will Never Let Go Of
Thanksgiving traditions Southerners will never let go of are plentiful. As much as I love Christmas, I have to admit I am partial to certain aspects of Thanksgiving. I think it has something to do with the family gathering and the food, of course. And, I love Fall. Plus, it’s the start of the holidays, with so much more to look forward to. It’s also nice not having the stress of all the shopping and gift buying. Also, just like Christmas, Thanksgiving has many traditions people from all walks of life share.
But, according to Southern Living magazine, Thanksgiving traditions southerners celebrate are unique and deeply rooted. In fact, you hold them so close, you’ll never let go of them. Some of them may be less of a tradition and more of a subconscious habit. In any case, we embrace them just the same. This list reminds us of all those unforgettable moments shared around the table for the biggest feast of the year. I also added a few of my own to the list that I feel, at least in my house, are time-honored traditions. See if you spot any of your family in this list of Thanksgiving traditions southerners are proud to never let go of.
