Will Indian Land South Carolina Become Its Own City?
We moved to the Carolinas in 2006. We first located to Indian Trail, North Carolina when our Carolina adventure began. However, in 2021 we relocated to Indian Land, South Carolina to save a bit of money on our son’s college tuition in Conway, South Carolina. We love the area, and it’s amazingly convenient to everything we need. The region is bustling and growing by leaps and bounds. And, Lancaster County Manager Dennis Martsell indicates the growth is likely to continue for the next couple of decades. Now, we learn that there’s a discussion to make Indian Land, South Carolina its own city. Will it happen?
Well, only time will tell. WSOC TV reports the first of several meetings to consider the option is January 23 at 6 p.m. It takes place at the Kershaw Branch of the Lancaster County Library on N. Hampton Street. And, county leaders encourage the public to attend and voice their opinions. The so called ‘2040 Plan’ contains other topics as well. But, the idea of Indian Land incorporation is the one that seems to catch the attention of most residents.
In reviewing the overview of the 2040 Plan for Lancaster County, I see that it notes the county is one of the fastest growing counties in the region and the United States. It refers to the ‘northern arm’ of the county as ‘The Panhandle.’ And, that’s the part of the county that encompasses Van Wyck and Indian Land. Of course, it’s where the majority of growth is taking place.
And, in a community survey conducted in March of 2022, residents expressed concerns in areas of growth and development, traffic congestion, schools and public infrastructure. Also, a large number of residents wanted a plan to control growth and slow down development.
Thus, in a nutshell, in order to provide proper infrastructure to support continued growth, leaders bring up incorporation. After all, the growth is sure to continue once the proposed locations of Costco and Target come to fruition. The area along 521 tends to get very congested already. We drive the route toward 485 in Ballantyne daily for our work commute.
But, I, for one, welcome growth as long as preparations go along with it. I love all the restaurants and stores available to us in Indian Land. Since we moved here the area added a Chipotle, a Crumbl Cookie a Wells Fargo branch as well as many other businesses. And, I look forward to the Costco and Target.
