Is THIS The Solution To North Carolina DMV Woes?
Perhaps a solution to one of North Carolina’s glaring inadequacies is coming soon as there’s movement afoot to privatize the DMV. When we came to North Carolina in the spring of 2006, everything could not have gone smoother. In fact, I remember regarding how this interstate move (Birmingham, Alabama to Charlotte) was one of the easier we’d done. And we’d done more than our fair share. Okay, everything was smooth as glass RIGHT UP UNTIL it came time to switch over our driver’s licenses. OMG! What a nightmare. For lifelong residents of the Tar Heel State, if you thought, “Oh, it’s like this everywhere.” Wrong.
I don’t know if I EVER remember waiting in any significant lines or having other issues in Texas, Florida, Georgia, or Alabama. Oh, and I’ll get to South Carolina in a second. North Carolina has just never figured out the whole DMV experience at all. I’ll never forget being made to take a written test, in my mid 30s to, I guess, see if I was qualified to drive in the state. Really? I’d been driving for twenty+ years at that point. And by the time we had to go through the process of getting our teenager licensed, I honestly think the bureaucracy and red tape had gotten worse.
And the sad thing is, all one need do is look to the southern border, ie South Carolina. In October of 2021 we moved over the border to Indian Land. I cannot even begin to tell you how refreshing it was to deal with South Carolina changing over our licenses. Walked right in, got it done, walked right out of the DMV. No appointment.
WHY can’t North Carolina just “figure it out?” Apparently, the state may finally be on the right track. There’s a privatization movement afoot. WRAL reports, “State House and Senate Republican leaders say they don’t know yet whether fully privatizing the DMV would be a good idea. However, they say something has to change because what’s in place now isn’t working.”
As the entire population replies, “You think?!” If you’re wondering would this make a difference. Ask yourself this question. Do you have more faith in the US Postal Service or FecEx? See, privatization works.
Privatizing the North Carolina DMV isn’t going to happen all at once and probably not in total. However, it’s nice to know it could be coming soon.
