Black Bears At Myrtle Beach And Where The Latest One Is Hanging Out
It’s not unusual from time to time to have black bear sightings in the Carolinas in the mountains and even in Charlotte. But, now there’s black bears at Myrtle Beach and here’s where they’re hanging out.

So, I was doing a daily check on my college son’s email to make sure there weren’t any bills or notices I needed. And, the Coastal Carolina University department of safety sent a message to students concerning black bears at Myrtle Beach.
It seems folks spotted a black bear hanging out on campus this week in one of the student parking lots. Now, good news is that with it being summer semester the student population is pretty scarce right now.
However, it’s definitely something to be aware of. And, as a friend pointed out, people they know who live at the beach often see black bears in their backyards on security cameras.
I don’t know why I wasn’t expecting black bears at Myrtle Beach. But, I guess I just associate them with cooler temps and mountain areas. So, I did a little digging for more info.
Black Bears At Myrtle Beach And Why We See Them Now
And, according to a story from The State, South Carolina has around 1600 black bears. And, even though many are in the mountains, several hundred are found along the coast of Myrtle Beach.
Black bears are emerging from hibernation as temps warm up. And, they start looking for food. Well, a college campus is a good place to start.
So, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources warns residents to keep garbage cans tightly closed, properly store pet food and clean up camping sites.
And, according to the story, we are about to hit the breeding season for bears in South Carolina, from June to August.
The email the school sent my son and other students concerning black bears at Myrtle Beach said in part, “a black bear has recently been spotted on campus near the HH parking lot. Remain alert of your surroundings, especially when outdoors. Notify DPS if you spot a bear and refrain from approaching.”
My friend also reminded my that with all the new housing, the bears probably are being forced out.
So, I’ll definitely be on the lookout for black bears in Myrtle Beach as we make another trip down this weekend!
