North Carolina Outer Banks Accent Leaves Artificial Intelligence All Confused
We got our very first taste of artificial intelligence really about a decade ago. We have been asking our in home smart device and phones silly questions for awhile. But there are certain accents the technology has trouble making out. The North Carolina Outer Banks accent leaves artificial intelligence all confused.
North Carolina Outer Banks Accent Is It’s Own Unique Dialect
Maybe you thought your device was just sassy when “she” keep saying things like, “I didn’t get that”. Finally after several go rounds with that you just give up and google the answer. According to our source, The Charlotte Observer, a survey says there are 30 dialects around the country that are difficult for artificial intelligence to discern.
AI Ain’t From Around Here Y’all
Guide2Fluency.com says “she” can’t make out the accents perfectly in places like Texas, Tennessee and some categories of the Southern accent. So what I am getting is that AI, “ain’t from around here”. For example when a native of the Outer Banks says things like high tide, it comes out sounding like hoi toide. That’s the opposite of low tide but then if you are from the area you already know that. Hoi Toide is it’s very own dialect. And AI doesn’t get it.
Here’s Why That Down East Accent Is So Unique
The North Carolina Outer Banks accent is unique. Native islanders are descended from the Scottish,Irish and English that settled in Ocracoke back in the 1700s. The mix of those brogues makes up the unique way down east accent.
According to the survey, “This unique dialect, with its retained Elizabethan English features, can sound like a foreign language to AI. Asking about ‘dingbatters’ or saying you’re particularly ‘quamished’ might have your AI suggesting bat houses or food.” Honestly, I might have trouble making that out too. And my intelligence is not artificial. If you ask people from Ocracoke what “quamished” means, it apparently means they have an upset stomach.
Some believe Artificial Intelligence will revolutionize and make life better. And some do not. One thing is for sure, it still has a long way to go.
