Whataburger In North Carolina And What’s Behind The Rapid Expansion
Seems like lately every time I open up a news article it’s about another location in the Carolinas being eyed by the popular Texas based burger chain. But, with this rapid expansion of Whataburger in North Carolina, I wondered why so many, so quickly.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I am a Texas born girl. And, I am a huge fan of the original Whataburger, not to be confused with the one in North Carolina already. That one is What-A-Burger. The two are not related in any way.
And, I welcome the expansion of Whataburger locations in North Carolina. But, I had to do some digging to find out what happened all of a sudden to bring on the growth to the Tar Heel State.
The Texas brand started in 1950 in Corpus Christi. The one North Carolina folks are familiar with came along later in 1956. And, for so many years the Texas based chain with hundreds of locations in the Lone Star State was slow to move this direction.
Although we would come across a few locations on our travels in Louisiana, we had given up hope of being able to satisfy our cravings locally with Whataburger in North Carolina.

However, in addition to the previously mentioned possibilities for Charlotte, North Carolina locations, I learned today there could be a 3rd one in the works.
According to The Herald, Whataburger submitted an application for a “conceptual meeting” to build at 5018 Sunset Road at a former Circle K site. Over the past year or two, plans have been filed at two other locations including 12809 Albemarle Road and 5301 South Blvd.
What Might Be Behind The Rapid Expansion Of Whataburger In North Carolina
And, in doing some research it seems rapid expansion coincides with the 2019 purchase of Whataburger by Chicago based BDT Capital. An article in mysanantonio.com refers to the BDT Capital plan for ‘aggressive’ growth. Plus, in conjunction with the new growth, Whataburger is franchising once again for the first time in almost 20 years.
So, under new ownership and leadership the brand set its sights on becoming multiregional. And, in looking at what appeals to BDT in markets they’ve expanded to, including Kansas City and Nashville, it seems multi layered.
Spokespersons point out they look for family oriented communities and cities that draw tourists and visitors. Furthermore, it’s been said that the company received thousands of requests for expansion of Whataburger locations in North Carolina.
Well, for whatever reason, I’m happy there could be another possibility for Whataburger in North Carolina soon. We’ll keep our eye on this developing story.
And, we’ll be on the lookout for the familiar orange and white striped motif that calls to us for those delicious burgers and taquitos! Read the full article for more about the BDT deal. And, browse the menu to see what Texans rave about!
