Former Butler High Basketball Star Going For Gold In Paris
In the world of athletics, if you just count high school acclaim, former Butler High School standout Cierra Burdick has already had an amazing life. She was honored in track and field and in basketball? She attained near legendary status. Twice in her career at Butler she was named the state of North Carolina’s Player of the Year, and oh yeah, there’s that little thing called a state championship.
Cierra Burdick’s Career After Butler
Following her time at Butler High School, Cierra Burdick took her basketball talents to one of the most prestigious schools for women’s basketball in the country, The University of Tennessee. There, she achieved All-American status and then played for several years in the WNBA. In recent years, she’s applied her talents to the game for teams overseas in Italy, Israel, Russia, Spain, Poland, France, and Hungary. And it’s in Europe once again that Cierra Burdick will be chasing one, last hoop dream.
What Exactly Is Cierra Burdick Doing In The Olympics?
Cierra Burdick is playing for Team USA in basketball, but not in the traditional sense. For lack of a better term, Cierra’s going for the gold in “pickup street ball.” I kid, of course, and am in no way casting dispersions on the 3×3 event. However, everyone who has ever played the game has played 3×3 in the half-court more times than they can count. The biggest difference is there’s a clock. The game has a 10-minute continuous timer running. Also, for those who’ve never played, the scoring is a little different. Each basket is worth one point with each made beyond the three-point arc receiving two points. First time to 21 points wins.
Who Are Cierra Burdick’s Olympic Teammates?
According to WCNC, Burdick will be joined on Team USA by Wake Forest alum Dearica Hamby, as well as Rhyne Howard and Hailey Van Lith. The team is coached by Jennifer Rizzotti and hits the floor for the first time in Paris on July 30 against Germany in pool play.
