Gallery: Wicked Was So Divine
I think Tanner and I may be the only people, that I know of, that didn’t like the production of ‘Hamilton’ that came to Charlotte. He and I went with our spouses to the theater when it came here with high expectations. It was all anybody could talk about. Remember all the hype? We looked at each other during the intermission and we were both ready to go. So when ‘Wicked’ came to town, I tried to temper my expectations. I really wanted to like it. In fact, I needed to LOVE it. Nothing like waiting til the last minute. We saw the very last performance of the show’s Charlotte run.
I knew it was somewhat of a prequel to the ‘Wizard of Oz’; the story of Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy Showed up. That was really the extent of what I knew. I also know that I DO love a musical.I have pretty basic needs in a musical. I need all the pomp and beauty and pageantry of a musical. I need tricks and acrobatics and professional level singing, dancing and story telling. ‘Wicked’ gave us all that and so much more. Even my husband loved it and he is a tough nut to crack.
In ‘Wicked’ you do get the back story on all the key characters;lots of aha moments, beautiful sets, costumes, vocal performances that make you cry and dance numbers that lift you to another world.
It was so wonderful to get back to loving musical theater again. Thank you Blumenthal Performing Arts! It had been so long since I had been in that space. Thank you ‘Wicked’ for taking me to Oz. I feel changed for good.
