Inspirational Cheerleader Performs Solo After Squad Quits
When the going gets tough in life, the easiest thing to do is to walk away. It takes intestinal fortitude to face the deck that’s stacked against you, and then stand and deliver (okay, I’ll stop with the cliches). Regardless of the outcome, those that do automatically earn my respect. Most of the time, this takes a level of maturity that is not present in high school. However, this is not the case with Nebraska high school cheerleader, Katrina Kohel.
The final cheerleading competition of the Morrill High School (Nebraska) senior’s cheerleading life was coming, and the rest of her squad quit “for personal reasons.” This occurred just two weeks before the event. Kohel’s coach, April Ott told her they would still attend the competition and watch from the sidelines. That wasn’t good enough for Katrina. According to The Independent, Kohel told a Fox affiliate TV station, “I decided I wanted to go and still compete because I wanted to end my senior year with a bang, and I didn’t want to give up on cheerleading because it has been such a huge part of my life.”
And that’s precisely what she did.
Standing alone anytime takes courage. Standing alone-and competing-in a team event, as an 18-year-old girl? Big time courage. And Katrina Kohel was rewarded with massive crowd support. If you’re wondering if she won, the answer is no. As a solo act, Kohel wasn’t able to be scored in the same matter as a complete team would have been. However, she did place eighth out of twelve squads in her division. And that is the highest the Morrill High School Cheerleading Squad has placed in three years.
And in my book, won the gold for most inspirational performance.
