North Carolina Zoo Continues Busy Season Of Births
The North Carolina Zoo has had a busy few months when it comes to new attractions being born in house. Last spring, a giraffe was born. Then a couple of months ago “Gigi” the chimpanzee gave birth in front of some very excited zoo visitors one afternoon (see video below). Not to be upstaged, 11-year-old first time mom, “Genie,” gave birth to this cute little chimp on July 1. Unlike Gigi’s event, Genie little girl gift came overnight in her indoor enclosure. You know that had to be quite the surprise for her keepers that next morning, right?
According to WRAL, North Carolina Zoo animal keeper Sarah Himmelspach says, “Genie is doing so well being a first-time mom. Genie’s childcare practice with her little brother Obi is definitely coming in handy. The baby girl is so strong and holding on tight whenever mom moves. Little girl’s uncle Obi has been very curious but respectful as mom and baby get more comfortable with the rest of the troop.”
Speaking of that troop, here’s the full roster of the 17 chimpanzees at The North Carolina Zoo:
Females:
Gigi
Amy
Ebi
Gari
Genie and her infant
Gerre
Ruby
Tammy
Males:
Jonathan
Lance
Sokoto
Kendall,
Gus
Obi
Gigi’s infant
Okay, so mam Genie and her new baby are healthy and happy. But wait, there’s something missing. Oh yes, a name. This is kind of a cool thing. The new baby Chimpanzee at the North Carolina Zoo doesn’t have a name yet. And you can have a say in it. North Carolina Zoo Society members will get the chance to vote on her new name from a list selected by keepers.
In case you were wondering, here’s a little chimpanzee FYI for ya. The gestation period for chimpanzees is 230 days. Chimps have an average life span of 35-40 years in zoos.
